The Dark Knight Rises Review

Once in every few years, a film's expectation reaches fever pitch. Yet, only a handful ever have lived up to it. The last of the "Batman Trilogy", to the delight of fans, does. That it does so, while continuing on the same themes it addressed before, is a feather hardly any film franchisee has claimed.

Seven years since Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) retired as Batman, a new villain Bane (Tom Hardy) threatens not only Gotham's peace, but its very existence. When the entire city is taken hostage by Bane's men and the police are locked up, Batman must return, and fight an impossible resistance with a handful others.

The least one expects from a very popular, self-professed end of a series film is a grand scale. Most commercial cinema merely increases the effects and physical action. While Nolan indeed delivers on these, he goes beyond.

A bank or even a building being held hostage is well-known in cinema. Did you ever imagine an entire city held hostage for months? Like in the second part of the series, Nolan then asks the question: Would normal citizens rise up to become heroes?

Yet, morally and metaphorically, 'The Dark Knight' was stronger. There he asked the same question, but to individual citizens and in the climax on the two boats, to an opposite group of people. There, Batman wins because people in the two boats beat their instinct for self survival by refusing to kill the others for their own sake. In that scene, everyone becomes a superhero. Everyone becomes Batman.

That edginess of script, that triumph of true courage, is missing in this part. It compensates by rising on other counts.

The Nolan brothers (Christopher and Jonathan) know how to intermix a grim story of power, corruption, control and heroism with a spectacular razzle-dazzle. In a very powerful screenplay, the brothers bring attention to the corruption, the power structures and the chaos of the affluent class.

And the brothers, in creating villains that are alter-egos of Batman, and in often giving them ideals as high as him but in the end showing these anarchist villains failing, perhaps makes the greatest joke, the greatest metaphor on the state of the world today.

Perhaps the hidden, dark message is that no matter how much one resists - be it Batman or his villains - a corrupt power structure and affluence will survive. The brothers perhaps want to say that resistance, eventually, proves futile. Perhaps they want to say the opposite, that good and bad, light and darkness and falling and rising take turns and that no matter what, one has to resist.

Nolan is a man in absolute control of his craft. You'll be hard pressed to find a man with such ability to interplay sound and visuals to create a three-dimensional vision in your head.

Hans Zimmer assists him with superlative yet gentle and sombre background score, while as expected, the special effects division delivers the wares without going overboard.

Nolan carries forward the themes from the previous two films - fear, death, anger, corruption, heroism and chaos, and rounds them up into a perfect whole.

In the end though, the true hero that rises from this series is Christopher Nolan. In the wasteland of commercial Hollywood cinema, he is the best thing that has happened in a long time. May his clan increase everywhere.

"CINEMA COMPANY" Review

You find yourself in a fix truly, when you see a bunch of youngsters in 'Cinema Company' dissecting a film that they have just seen, and expressing their displeasure at what they have been through for the last couple of hours. An odd two hours later in the cinema hall, you find yourself in exactly the same predicament, and with your hammer and tongs all set down, you settle down to take a closer look at what 'Cinema Company' is all about.

'Cinema Company' is all about four youngsters Panicker (Sanjeev), Paulachan (Basil), Fazal (Badri) and Paru (Shruthi) who have become thick friends, as thick as the Thick Rap, ever since they came across each other at the International Film Festival of Kerala. They share a love for films, and are called the 'Cinema Company' by all and sundry.

Their decision to make a film is quite all on a sudden, when being teased by a friend that they are basically jobless. Film making, they soon realize is no ordinary job, and they painfully get around the stumbling blocks one by one until their dream film gets to be made.

Well, almost. I kinda really liked the build up of this film, and was surprised to see that the story suggests that whatever Fazal has been scripting comes true in real. It brings to mind the film that Paru has been talking about initially; the second half of which lost steam, and it comes to real in 'Cinema Company' as well!

The resurrection of the film within the film is what carries 'Cinema Company' forward in the latter half, and it gets increasingly unconvincing with every passing moment. Everything falls into place eventually, and the film does get made. But the dramatics that precede the climax are absolutely out of place.

Sometimes it so happens that a cinema that tries to be as 'uncinematic' as possible eventually does give in to the pressures that build up from all around. The superstar Rajeev Krishna (Nithin) being coerced to offer support to 'Cinema Company'' yet again is one such occasion that stands out like a real sore thumb. That the sequence itself turns out to be watch worthy thanks to Nithin's fine performance is another matter altogether.

Which brings me to the impressive young blood that has been cast in the film. Basil, as is suggested in the film, does have the looks of a hero, and is bound to go a far way. I loved the performances of Sanjeev, Badri, Shruthi, Lakshmi, Sanam, Swasika and Shibla as well. 'Cinema Company' goes on to prove that there is so much of talent that lies unexplored in Malayalam cinema.

Alphones' musical score, barring a Thick Rap that didn't appeal to my sensibilities, is impressive. Jibu Jacob's frames ensure that the film looks stunning on screen.

If there is one thing that 'Cinema Company' has served, it's simply that it makes me want to wait for Mamas' next film. Having moved ahead by leaps and bounds since his debut film 'Paappi Appacha', the script might have failed him this time around, but this is a film maker who's bound to bounce back for more. And the next time, I'm sure, it's only gonna get better.

mullamottum mundirichaarum

Year of release:2011
Director:Aneesh Anwer
Producer:Soman Pallatt
Cast:Indrajith Sukumaran, Meghna Raj, Ananya, Praveena
Lyrics:Kaithapram,Engandiyoor Chandrasekharan
Music:Mohan Sithara
Cinematography:Sujith Vasudev
Story/Writer:Biju K Joseph

Mullamottum Munthiricharum' is set in a new age village in Kerala, where nature still has retained its pristine charms, but where men have encroached in a major way. Churutta Jose (Indrajith) has a way with snakes, and has killed many of them as and when he had been beckoned by people to come to their rescue. He is a loner who lives all by himself, and also serves as a part-time goon, whose services are availed by the local moneybag brother Tomy (Ashokan) and Sunny (Tini Tom).

One such endeavor leads Jose to Suchitra's (Meghna Raj) doorstep, and before he knows it she becomes a part of his life. An accident brings in another young lady Ranimol (Ananya) into the picture, and the love triangle is now complete.

For the kind of story that it tells, 'Mullamottum Munthiricharum' is terribly long, and has a running time of two hours and forty fivev minutes. Almost three hours of story telling unfortunately doesn't merit this tale. Trimmed of probably a good thirty minutes, the film could have appeared a bit more compact.

The story in itself reminds you some of those films in the late eighties and nineties that had a vagabond hero being set straight by the arrival of a woman. There is nothing new in here, and the film holds very little surprises in store.

Even after it all comes down to a humdrum ending, the film is stretched a bit further, wanting to reveal a climactic twist. This turn around however, is another major disappointment, especially since any discerning viewer might be able to identify the surprise by then.

There are different ways in which the title could be interpreted, but I would like to believe that they stand for the two lovely women in this film, with the man being caught between the two. He doesn't have to make a selection though, as the three individuals that make up this triangle have pretty much got their heads clear.

Indrajith and Meghna Raj are quite at ease playing their non-complex roles, but it's Ananya who steals the thunder from right under their noses with a hilarious act. She is also very much a part of some of the lighter moments in the film that do manage to bring a smile to your face. Thilakan is pretty much wasted.

Aneesh Anwar does show sparks of talent, but the script has mostly defeated his purpose as of now. A special mention needs to be made of Sujith Vasudev, who does gift us with some charming frames in the film.

At best 'Mullamottum Munthiricharum' offers a few amusing moments, but remains quickly forgettable. It could do well with some script polish and perhaps with a lot

Thattathin Marayathu Review 2

Writer-director Vineeth Sreenivasan’s Thattathin Marayathu talks about an innocent love story that leaves you with a smile in the end. Not many films can boast of such a claim these days and this refreshing tale of romance turns out to be thoroughly engaging. The story is happening in a sleepy village in Thalassery where Vinod (Nivin Pauly), an average student from a modest Hindu household falls in love with a beautiful girl named Aisha (Isha Talwar), hailing from a wealthy and influential Muslim family.
Their first real ‘meeting’ ended up literally in an accident and he was almost instantly smitten by her ample charm. Vinod and his friends try every possible way to grab her attention and to their surprise, she reciprocates the feeling, pretty easily.
Now what happens next is what the story is all about and it is told mostly with clichéd situations, melodramatic moments and smart lines but portrayed in quite a delicious way. In fact that stylish narration is the strength of the film as well. With a cute, simple storyline, which is meant to be enjoyed like of whiff of pure fresh air, the film just keeps you engaged all along, quite effectively.
Of course this one is far from perfect and at times, the events mentioned tend to defy logic as well. And the scenes towards the beginning of the second half, when the character Hamza (Bhagath Manuel) makes his entry, is a bit out of sync. But with brilliant visuals from Jomon T John, excellent music by Shaan Rahman, with a well-written script and good presentation, Vineeth takes the viewers on a romantic trail.
With a new look that makes him really handsome and younger, Nivin Pauly performs with confidence and ease. There are moments when he fumbles but this is one of the most impressive performances by a young actor during recent times, when almost the entire focus is on him.
Debutante Isha Talwar looks beautiful, but she is mainly shown through her beau’s eyes. Watch out for a brilliant show by Aju Varghese as the hero’s confidant. The rest of the cast has also come up with a nice show.
A feel good romantic film hasn’t been one of the favourite genres in Malayalam for pretty long. No surprises if Thattathin Marayathu makes you feel romantic, with its cuteness and innate honesty. Don’t miss this one!
